The President of the Armenian Association of Neonatal Medicine, Pediatric Resuscitator Dr. Hrant Kalenteryan on Monday, July 4 presented the results of the first experience in neonatal therapeutic hypothermia in Armenia.

The Development of Neonatology in Armenia conference took plance in Yerevan on Monday.

According to Kalenteryan, moderate therapeutic hypothermia can increase a child's viability as well as prevent neurological deviations.

“The most important conclusion we made during this experience is the lack of complications,” he said.

According to him, the first patient to have received hypothermic treatment is already 1.5 years old, but still, it’s too early to speak about the effectiveness of the treatment. The expert said that this method is commonly used worldwide, with Armenia looking to embrace it as well.

“Various authors say that 20-50% of children that did not receive hypothermic treatment suffer from serious neurological anomalies,” Kalenterian noted.
