According to preliminary data, no Armenians have been killed or injured during an attempted military coup in Turkey, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In an earlier message, the Ministry said that Armenians who need assistance in Turkey must contact the Foreign office in Armenia (special hot line: +374 60 620552; A.manaserian@mfa.am, as well as via the Ministry’s social media pages).

“No other country represents our interests there,” spokesman Tigran Balayan said in a tweet.

An attempted military coup has apparently been defeated in Turkey, in a bid to oust the president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, accusing him of undermining the country’s secular traditions.

104 people involved in the attempted coup were killed in clashes at military police command. In total, 1,563 members of the armed forces have been arrested, among them 29 colonels and five generals. At least 90 people were killed, a further 1,154 people have been wounded.
