Tokyo Film Fest to honor Martin Scorsese, Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is to give its Samurai Award to Martin Scorsese and Japanese director Kiyoshi Kurosawa this year, the fest announced, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The award honors "achievements by veteran filmmakers who continue to create groundbreaking films that carve paths to a new era in cinema," and was launched in 2014.

Each year so far it has been awarded to one local and one internationally renowned director. Previous recipients are John Woo, Tim Burton, Yoji Yamada and Takeshi Kitano.

Kurosawa is known for his horror films, as well as human dramas such as Tokyo Sonata and Journey to the Shore.

A talk-show, In Person: Kiyoshi Kurosawa, will be held on Nov. 3, the last day of the fest, when the award will be presented. Scorsese is unable to attend.
