Paul Feig in talks to helm Mindy Kaling comedy

Paul Feig is in serious talks to direct Mindy Kaling in an untitled comedy set in the world of late-night talk shows, Variety has learned.

Fox 2000 is backing the film, which is described as a mixture of “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Broadcast News.” Emma Thompson will co-star in the project. Kaling wrote the screenplay for the film. A final deal for Feig has not been signed yet.

Feig has built a career making comedies centered on female protagonists. He scored big hits with “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat,” and “Spy.” He also directed last summer’sall-female reboot of “Ghostbusters.”

Kaling has an intense following from her work as the creator of “The Mindy Project” and her supporting role on “The Office.” She is due to appear in the big-budget adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time” and in “Ocean’s 8,” an all-female spin on “Ocean’s 11.” Thompson is an Oscar-winner for “Howard’s End,” and will next be seen in “Beauty and the Beast” as Mrs. Potts.

Feig has a long association with Fox. His production company is on the lot, he produced “The Peanuts Movie” for the studio, and Fox released “The Heat” and “Spy.” If the deal happens, Feig will produce the picture with his partner Jessie Henderson. Sources close to the project say Feig loved Kaling’s script and he is eager to work with the comedian and with Thompson.
