Karl Urban to join Brenton Thwaites in “Entry Level” action thriller

Karl Urban is in negotiations to join the action thriller “Entry Level,” less than a week after Brenton Thwaites came on board as the lead, Variety reports.

Producers are Craig Perry and Sheila Taylor (who worked on the “Final Destination” and “American Pie” franchises) of Practical Pictures and Tom Butterfield of Content Media. Dan Spilo of Industry Entertainment will executive produce.

The film is set to begin shooting in the first quarter of next year. It recently qualified for the California Film Commission’s film and TV tax credit.

Thwaites stars as a young man who mysteriously awakens in a high-security office building. He’s then forced by a stranger to complete a strictly timed series of dangerous tasks that implicate him in a deadly crime.

Urban will portray the head of the building’s security team.

Franck Khalfoun will direct from a script by Benjamin Hurley. Khalfoun recently completed directing “Amityville: The Awakening,” starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, and set for release by The Weinstein Company in January.

13 Films is handling international sales on the project and will continue sales at the American Film Market this week.

Urban recently reprised his role as Leonard McCoy in “Star Trek Beyond.” He was most recently seen in “Pete’s Dragon” and will be in the upcoming Marvel Entertainment “Thor: Ragnarok,” currently in production.

“Karl Urban’s ability to present a smart, gritty character who is shaded with humanity makes him the ideal person for this role,” said Taylor. “We couldn’t imagine a better foil for our film, and cannot wait to watch his character race against the clock as he puts the pieces together.”
