Former Georgia President resigns as Ukraine Odessa governor

Mikheil Saakashvili, the former Georgian president, has resigned as governor of Ukraine's Odessa region, BBC News reports.

The news channel 112 Ukrayina TV said Saakashvili cited corruption in the capital, Kiev, as one reason for his decision.

He also criticised the huge wealth of some Ukrainian politicians.

He was appointed Odessa governor in May 2015, with a remit to fight corruption.

His resignation followed that of the Odessa police chief and fellow Georgian, Giorgi Lortkipanidze.
