Chris Hemsworth’s “Horse Soldiers” adds cast

After landing a lead role in Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Detroit Riots pic, Ben O’Toole is in negotiations to join another A-list ensemble in Black Label Media and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Afghan war movie “Horse Soldiers”, Variety reports.

He joins Chris Hemsworth, Michael Shannon, and “Moonlight” breakout Trevante Rhodes in the film with Nicolai Fuglsig directing.

Producers are Jerry Bruckheimer, Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill and Peter Craig and Ted Tally penned the script. Chad Oman is exec producing.

“Horse Soldiers” is based on Doug Stanton’s book about a U.S. Special Forces team and their captain after they are dispatched to a mountainous region of Afghanistan in the weeks immediately following 9/11. The soldiers must join forces with a Northern Alliance warlord to fight against overwhelming odds to drive out the Taliban.

Lionsgate is handling foreign sales on the project, recently selling it at the American Film Market.

After breaking out in Russell Crowe’s “The Water Diviner,” O’Toole appeared in the recently released “Hacksaw Ridge” as the second in command to Vince Vaughn’s drill sergeant. He beat out a number of actors vying for the role in Bigelow’s movie revolving around the 1967 Detroit Riots.
