The Weeknd sets record for most Spotify streams in a day

The Weeknd has set the record for the most amount of streams on Spotify in a single day, NME reveals.

The Toronto artist, AKA Abel Tesfaye, released his third studio album ‘Starboy’ last week (November 25). The record features collaborations with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Daft Punk and Lana Del Rey.

As Pitchfork reports, the rate of streams for the first few days of ‘Starboy”s release have made very good reading for The Weeknd. Spotify have confirmed that ‘Starboy’ has broken the record for the most amount of streams on the platform in a single day, but have not yet provided any official breakdown of the streaming figures in question.

In a statement provided to Billboard, Republic Records Chairman and Co-Founder Monte Lipman said: “Spotify’s continued support of The Weeknd has now reached historic proportions and also reinforces the tremendous growth of global streaming.” Spotify Global Head of Creator Services Troy Carter agreed, stating: “We’re proud to have partnered with The Weeknd, his management and Republic Records on a phenomenal album.”

Back in September, Spotify revealed the top 10 songs to be streamed in Britain over the summer. Drake‘s chart-conquering ‘One Dance’ unsurprisingly topped the list, which also included tracks by the likes of Calvin Harris, Major Lazer and Justin Timberlake.
