“Las Reinas” detective drama lands ABC pilot pickup

More than two years after it was first put into development, ABC is moving forward with Las Reinas.

The Disney-owned network on Wednesday, Feb. 1 handed out a pilot order to the drama from executive producer Mark Gordon (Quantico, Designated Survivor) and writer Dean Georgaris, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

Las Reinas, originally developed at ABC in October 2014, revolves around Detective Sonya De La Reina, who is forced to confront her past when a case compels her to reconnect with her estranged family — the most powerful criminal outfit in Miami. Thrust back into the world she thought she had left behind, Sonya must walk the murky line between the law and her family, and question her true destiny as a De La Reina.

Georgaris (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life) will pen the script and exec produce the ABC Studios drama. Gordon and his Mark Gordon Co. topper Nicholas Pepper will also exec produce.

This marks Georgaris' second drama pilot order of the season. He's also writing NBC's military drama For God and Country for Keshet and Universal Television. (It is prolific producer Gordon's first pickup of the season and marks his latest foray for ABC after Quantico, Grey's Anatomy and Criminal Minds.)

For ABC, this is the network's 13th drama pilot order of the season — up one from last year.

Las Reinas is the latest project to score a pilot order after being previously developed during a different cycle. CBS added comedy Real Life, developed last season, while NBC has half-hour Happy Peppers, which was developed at CBS in 2015.
