Armenia president to transform National Security Council: expert

Military diplomat, academic and political adviser Hayk S. Kotanjian has expressed confidence that president Serzh Sargsyan will seriously transform the National Security Council during Armenia’s transition to a parliamentary system of governance.

According to him, in a normally-functioning state, the security council has a secretariat with experts and a secret activity, while a special committee “brings common strategic discussions down to a practical level.”

Besides, he said, permanent and temporary interdepartmental groups operate as part of the council.

“Serzh Sargsyan has a clear picture of this, believe me. We are facing a major transformation of that body, with Sargsyan set to lead the process,” Kotanjyan said..

He went on to explain that he wasn’t referring to a certain position: “Sargsyan will rather clarify goals and reassess policy directions,” he said, according to Aysor.am.

President Sargsyan said earlier that in the event that his ruling Republican Party should win in the parliamentary elections on April 2, he would “play a role in the security of our people.”
