Armenia looks to participate in Syria mine-clearing operations: minister

Armenia is planning to participate in mine clearance activities in Syria and will continue supplying humanitarian aid to the country, defense minister Vigen Sargsyan said.

“Armenia provides humanitarian assistance to the people of Syria with great pleasure, and we are very grateful to our Russian colleagues for helping us deliver the aid,” Sargsyan said in an interview with Interfax.

“We will continue this program in the future too.”

According to him, Yerevan and Moscow are engaged in an active dialogue on the Syrian issue.

“Based on instructions of the presidents of our countries, we are working on the possibility of the Armenian sappers’ participation in the humanitarian demining processes carried out by Russia in Syria,” Sargsyan added.

The Syrian conflict entering its seventh year, more than 465,000 Syrians have been killed in the fighting, more than a million have been injured and over 12 million Syrians have been displaced.
