Russia’s sale of weapons to Azerbaijan is the most painful aspect of Yerevan’s relations and friendship with Moscow, Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan said in an interview on Armenia TV on Sunday, July 16.

“I believe this question casts a shadow on a lot of things,” Sargsyan said.

“On the other hand, however, there may be some circumstances which are unacceptable for us, but allowable for them. Nothing serious has happened so far.”

“In the event of serious consequences in the future, we can blame (Russia). But if no serious consequences emerge, we must look at the situation as the Russian side’s long-term political activity, aimed at the stabilization of the (South Caucasus) region,” Sargsyan added.

Sargsyan described opinions about revising relations with Russia as “extremely dangerous words” which “could create an extremely difficult situation.”

Russia has on numerous occasions defended the shipment of weapons and ammunition to Azerbaijan as a means of maintaining military balance in the South Caucasus region.
