5 per cent of Austrians support Turkey's EU bid
Only 5 per cent of Austrians support Turkey's accession to the European Union. The index has considerably decreased against that of 2002, when Turkey's bid was supported by 32 per cent. At that, only 7 per cent of respondents have no exact stance on the issue.
Turkey's accession is supported by 46 per cent in Sweden and 22 per cent in France. Even Cyprus, an old enemy of Turkey, backs the bid with 19 per cent, according to the results of a survey held by the European Stability Initiative (ESI).
According to the survey, 60 per cent of the respondents do not highlight the religious aspect.
28 per cent think Europe is a "Christian stronghold".
74 per cent of the respondents do not eye Turkey as a European state.
