Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Uganda elected UN Security Council non-permanent members
In only one round of voting, the General Assembly elected Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda to serve as five non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2009.
They will fill the seats that will be vacated by Belgium, Indonesia, Italy, Panama and South Africa. Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Croatia, Libya and Viet Nam will continue to serve as elected Council members during 2009, for the second year of their respective terms.
The five non-permanent members were elected according to the following pattern: two from Africa and Asia, one from Western Europe and Other States, and one from Latin America and the Caribbean, the UN News Center reports.
