Spokesperson: Armenia-Azerbaijan border relatively calm

The situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan was relatively calm overnight, Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan said Friday, July 17 morning.

Stepanyan said the Azerbaijani troops used firearms to fire on the Armenian positions, and that the Armenian troops control the situation across the entire border.

In the wee hours of July 16, around 100 Azerbaijani troops launched an infiltration attempt, but were thwarted back to their posts after suffering major losses. Several hours later, they began to shell Armenian villages, damaging as many as 10 houses, a kindergarten and other facilities overnight.

Since the situation escalated on the border on July 12, Azerbaijan has launched three unsuccessful infiltration attempts. Since the next morning, the Azerbaijani military has been firing on the Armenian positions, also using large caliber grenade launchers and combat drones to target civilian homes in several border settlements. Four servicemen of the Armenian army have been killed, while Azerbaijan has reported 12 deaths.
