Armenia awarding National Hero title to Captain Ruben Sanamyan

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has proposed awarding the title of National Hero of Armenia to Captain Ruben Sanamyan.

The highest title in Armenia is awarded "for outstanding services of national importance to the Republic of Armenia in defense and strengthening of the state system and creation of important national values."

Along with the title, its recipients receive the Order of Fatherland. The first recipient of the title was Catholicos Vazgen I, the head of the Armenian church.

A total of 17 individuals have been awarded the title since Armenia's independence in 1991.

Pashinyan has also proposed awarding the Battle Cross Order to 71 servicemen who played an active role in the recent clashes on the border.

The situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalated on July 12, with Azerbaijan launching several unsuccessful infiltration attempts throughout the next week. The Azerbaijani military also used artillery and combat drones to target civilian homes in several border settlements in Armenia. Five servicemen of the Armenian army were killed, while Azerbaijan reported 12 deaths. In recent weeks, though, the situation has been relatively calm.
