Armenia: Charges brought against former top security official

The Special Investigation Service of Armenia has brought charges against Vachagan Ghazaryan, the chief of former President Serzh Sargsyan's security staff.

According to official information, Ghazaryan held the position of the First Deputy Head of the State Protection Service of the country's National Security Service in 2008-2018 and used his post against the interests of the service, "which inadvertently caused severe repercussions."

In particular, Ghazaryan had proposed that a driver from the country's National Security Service also worked for his wife while receiving a salary from the state.

From 2015 to 2018, the NSS has paid the driver almost 9.5 million drams (approximately $20,000) in salaries and bonuses.
