Armenian Apostolic Church marks Vardanants commemoration day
The Armenian Apostolic Church is celebrating Vardanants commemoration day on Feb. 19, honoring great commander Vardan Mamikonyan and his unwavering army, who fought the Battle of Avarayr on May 28, 451

A memorial liturgy was held in St. Zoravor church honoring the Battle of Avarayr, followed by а procession to Vardan Mamikonyan's monument.

In 5th century B.A. Armenia stood up for its national independence both from Byzantine "brothers in faith" and Persians controlling the Eastern Part of the country. The legend has it that an army of 60000 Armenian withstood 200000 Persians in the Battle of Avarayr.

The following words are ascribed to the great commander: "The death unacknowledged is truly a death, while the death acknowledged is immortality."

Vardanants is celebrated in the second week of February. Vardan the Commander and his 1036 soldiers were canonized.
