Suspect in Turkey detonates explosive, killing himself

An unidentified militant detonated an explosive device following a police chase on Monday near Turkey’s border with Syria, killing himself, media reports said. There were no other casualties, the Associated Press reports.

The incident occurred in the town of Iskenderun, in Hatay province, after police tried to stop two people inside a vehicle at a road block, according to the local governor.

Gov. Rahmi Dogan said on Twitter that an explosion took place as “one out of two terrorists” was “rendered ineffective” following the chase. The security operation was ongoing, he said.

HaberTurk television said the suspect died after detonating an explosive device.

Police, fire service rescuers and medical teams were dispatched to the area, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The incident came days after the U.S. Embassy in Turkey issued a security alert, saying it received reports of a possible attack on Americans and other foreigners, and urged American citizens to exercise caution. The American Embassy in Baku too issued a similar statement.
