The former head of Armenia's National Security Service Artur Vanetsyan who was arrested on Saturday, November 14 on charges of plotting to kill Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and seize power, was released on Sunday.

"I was accused of crimes I have not committed. They want to remove me from political processes. I will return to the court at 23:30, because there are still some formalities left," Vanetsyan, the head of the opposition centre-right Homeland, told reporters Sunday.

The statement signed by Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan has sparked protests in Armenia, with 16 opposition parties calling for Pashinyan to resign.

Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a deal to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days of intense fighting. Karabakh (Artsakh) President Arayik Harutyunyan has said he has agreed to the deal signed by Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan.
