Armenia: Deputy Defense Minister submits resignation

Deputy Defense Minister Gabriel Balayan has submitted his resignation, Aysor.am reports, some two weeks after the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict signed a statement on the cessation of hostilities which saw the Armenian side ceding large chunks of territory to Azerbaijan.

Balayan said his team has carried out reforms, recording irreversible institutional achievements.

"I regret to note the omissions, due to which I requested the Prime Minister on November 20 to dismiss me from my post," the official said.

Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan was earlier relieved of his position and replaced by Vagharshak Harutyunyan, the chief aide to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 10 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side is returning all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
