Armenia lifts martial law ahead of early elections

The Armenian parliament on Wednesday, March 24 voted to lift martial law, ahead of snap parliamentary elections planned in June.

President of the National Assembly Ararat Mirzoyan had earlier proposed to support the opposition Bright Armenia party's proposal and vote in its favor. Lilit Makunts, the head of the ruling My Step bloc, said immediately before the vote on Wednesday that her party would approve the move.

Armenia declared martial law in September when Azerbaijan launched a war against Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict that erupted on September 27 was brought to a halt on November 10 by a Russian-brokered peace deal.
