Armenia Catholicos talks post-war situation with MEP from France

Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II on Sunday, April 4 met French politician and Member of the European Parliament François-Xavier Bellamy to detail him on the damage caused by the 44-day war.

Bellamy and France's ambassador to Armenia Jonathan Lacôte had earlier attended a Sunday mass presided over by His Holiness.

During the meeting Karekin II thanked the authorities of France and the French people for supporting Armenia in times of crisis and expressed hope for stability and justice in the region.

The member of the European Parliament weighed in on the purpose of his visit – to learn more about the post-war situation, the problems facing Armenians in particular, the issues of preservation of the Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

The Catholicos unveiled in detail the damage caused by the Second Artsakh War and the challenges facing the people, expressing hope that the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan will receive a proper response from the international community and the European Parliament.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side has returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
