Lawmaker: Number of Armenian victims of Karabakh war won't exceed 4000

Lawmaker from the ruling My Step bloc Artak Manukyan said Friday, April 9 that the number of victims of the Second Karabakh War won't surpass 4000.

"We can say for sure that the number of victims of the war can't exceed 4000," Manukyan told a meeting of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security Affairs.

Lawmakers were discussing draft amendments to the law on making contributions to the Insurance Foundation for Servicemen. If approved, Armenian citizens will be required to pay between AMD 2000 and AMD 5000, ($4-$9) depending on the amount of their salaries.

The Insurance Fund pays allowances to families of Armenian soldiers killed or seriously injured during hostilities.

Manukyan suggested pushing the discussion back two months, as the country is still fighting the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and the 44-day war.
