Lebanese President invited to Armenian Genocide commemorations

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has been invited to attend events marking the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, according to information posted on the Lebanese Presidency's Facebook post.

Aoun hosted Armenia's Ambassador to Lebanon Vahagn Atabekyan to receive his Armenian counterpart Armen Sarkissian's invitation.

The commemorative events will be held on April 24. The parliament of Lebanon recognized the Armenian Genocide back in 2000.

On April 24, 1915, a group of several hundred Armenian intellectuals were rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. Every year on April 24, Armenians worldwide commemorate the anniversary of the Genocide, which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.
