Armenia says process to return PoWs is ongoing

Acting Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan said on Wednesday, June 23 that the process of returning the remaining Armenian prisoners of war and civilians from the Azerbaijani captivity is ongoing.

"I wouldn't say it's an easy process but I am confident that we have an opportunity to come to an agreement and resolve the problems," Aysor.am cited Avinyan as saying.

While the official failed to provide concrete information about whether more PoWs are expected to return home in the near future, he did comment on the border situation, maintaining that the Armenian side was not going to retreat.

"Clearly, the Azerbaijani troops must leave the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, and we will spare no effort to ensure that," Avinyan said.

According to him, border guards can be deployed when the Azerbaijani troops completely leave the territory of Armenia.

Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. One Armenian serviceman was killed in Azerbaijan’s shooting on May 25, six troops were captured on May 27, although four of them have already returned home.
