Baku: Russian defendant says worked for Azerbaijan during Karabakh war

Russian citizen Eduard Dubakov, who has been charged with terrorism in Azerbaijan, has said that he was invited to cooperate with the Azerbaijani special services in 2018 in Belarus and visited Nagorno-Karabakh on their instructions.

The Baku Grave Crimes Court began the trial against Dubakov on June 23, claiming that he fought in Karabakh on the side of Armenia.

Dubakov was charged with terrorism, financing of terrorism, participation in criminal activity, as well as illegal crossing of the state borders of Azerbaijan. However, the Russian citizen, who reportedly has Armenian roots, was detained in January when he was visiting Baku, Turan reports.

Dubakov said he was summoned to Baku in January 2021 to receive cash rewards and new assignments, but was detained instead.

Azerbaijan is also trying dozens of Armenian prisoners of war who were captured during or after the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh.
