Azerbaijan is building a railway to Shushi, the Nagorno-Karabakh city occupied since fall 2020, according to local media reports, with a Turkish company currently working on the design.

Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, jointly with Turkey’s Kalyon, has already started the design of the railway to Shushi, Javid Gurbanov, chairman of the Azerbaijan Railway, said on Friday, July 23.

Gurbanov said the company is currently working on the design and construction of railways in three directions: Horadiz-Nakhchivan (115 km to the border with Armenia), Shushi and Aghdam. However, he did not specify the length of the railway.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side has returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
