Merkel, Lukashenko congratulate Pashinyan on appointment as PM

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko have congratulated Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on his appointment as the Armenian PM.

According to Merkel, Pashinyan is now beginning his new mandate at a time of great challenges and uncertainty, as the Covid-19 pandemic demands "unprecedented action from all of us."

"Germany is ready to accompany the Republic of Armenia as a reliable partner on its path of reforms. The federal government will also continue to actively support efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group," Merkel wrote in a telegram.

Lukashenko said, meanwhile, that the Armenian people voted for peace, stability and development at the elections.

Caretaker Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party won 54% of the vote, while Hayastan (Armenia) bloc headed by second President Robert Kocharyan secured 22% of the ballots. "I Have Honor" bloc too will get seats in the parliament. Pashinyan was reappointed as the country's Prime Minister on August 3.
