Russia cannot deploy border guards on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border due to a lack of international legal framework and the lack of confidence between the parties, Alexander Bikantov, a deputy spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on Thursday, August 5.

Acting Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan earlier proposed to deploy checkpoints of Russian border guards along the entire length of the border with Azerbaijan.

"One of the problems in the implementation of the deployment of border guards along the frontier is the lack of international legal framework, which is superimposed on the lack of mutual trust between the parties," Bikantov told a briefing, RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, sustainable de-escalation in the region can be achieved only through the immediate delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan and its demarcation afterwards.

The Defense Ministry confirmed earlier that Russian troops have indeed been deployed in the border village of Voskepar in Armenia's Tavush province.
