First Azerbaijani plane lands at new Fizuli airport

Azerbaijan’s flag carrier Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) on Sunday, September 5 operated the first flight from the capital Baku to a newly-built airport in Fizuli, a town in Nagorno-Karabakh which came under Azerbaijan's control in the 44-day war in late 2020.

An Airbus A340-500 completed the flight 35 minutes after departing Baku. Journalists, travel bloggers, and representatives of various other organizations were the first passengers to arrive in the new air harbor, Caspian News reports.

Simultaneously with the passenger flight, the Baku-based Silk Way Airlines conducted the first cargo transportation on board the Boeing 747-400 airplane from Baku to the Fizuli International Airport.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev on November 9 signed a statement to end the war in Karabakh after almost 45 days. Under the deal, the Armenian side returned all the seven regions surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
