Armenia, UK discuss Karabakh settlement, return of PoWs

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan spoke to Wendy Morton, the UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for European Neighborhood and the Americas, over the phone on Monday, September 6 to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the return of Armenian prisoners of war from Azerbaijan and the situation in the region in general.

The sides discussed a wide range of issues on regional security and stability. Mirzoyan stressed that a lasting and sustainable peace in the region can be achieved through a comprehensive settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship on the basis of well-known principles and elements. Morton noted that the United Kingdom supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmanship.

The Armenian foreign policy chief underlined the need for the immediate repatriation of Armenian PoWs and captured civilians held in Azerbaijan.

Mirzoyan also briefed his British counterpart on the situation resulting from the provocative actions of Azerbaijan, particularly, the infiltration of Azerbaijani armed units into the sovereign territory of Armenia. He emphasized that such actions of Azerbaijan undermines efforts for regional security and stability.

In the context of coordinating the efforts of the states on climate change, the interlocutors discussed the effective holding of the 26th summit of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) to be held in Glasgow, UK in November this year, with the participation of the Armenian side.

Mirzoyan also expressed the readiness of the Armenian side to develop cooperation with the UK in areas of mutual interest.
