Ombudsman's staff visits Armenians released by Azerbaijan

Members of the Human Rights Defender's office on Wednesday, September 8 visited the two Armenian soldiers freed from Azerbaijani captivity the day before.

Their health was assessed after the Ombudsman's staff conducted separate interviews to determine the condition of their detention.

Azerbaijan on Tuesday released Aramayis Torozyan and Artur Nalbandyan in exchange for an Azerbaijani soldier recently arrested in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The two Armenians were flown to Yerevan from Baku by a Russian military plane. The swap deal was brokered by Major-General Rustam Muradov, the outgoing commander of Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in Karabakh

Nalbandyan and Torozyan went missing in thick fog on July 14 after driving a military vehicle near the border in Armenia’s Syunik province. Authorities in Azerbaijani, however, never confirmed the whereabouts of the two servicemen.
