Armenia, Iran mull expansion of gas for electricity swap deal

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Iran's ambassador to Yerevan Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri discussed the expansion of the gas for electricity swap deal between the two countries on Thursday, September 30, the Foreign Ministry reports.

While hailing partnership on various platforms and the development of relations, the two stressed the importance of the expansion of cooperation in the trade and economic sphere, which would enable the sides to increase turnover to $1 billion.

Mirzoyan and Zohouri also weighed in on regional security and stability, with the Armenian side slamming Azerbaijan's incursion into Armenia as provocation that undermines efforts for peace and development in the region. Mirzoyan also said he appreciates Iran's stance on the preservation of Armenia's territorial integrity.

Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. Since then, almost a dozen Armenian servicemen have been killed in Azerbaijan’s shooting, a dozen others have been wounde.
