Baku, Tehran planning new road though Iran

Baku and Tehran are planning to establish communication links that would connect Azerbaijan to the Nakhijevan Autonomous Republic through the territory of the Islamic Republic, according to a press release from the Azerbaijani presidency.

The matter was discussed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran Rostam Ghasemi on Friday, March 11.

They noted that the new "corridor" would be a branch of the North-South Transport Corridor, and that this would create good grounds for cooperation in both East-West and North-South directions.

The Azerbaijani side has on multiple occasions raised the question about a "corridor" through the southern Armenian province of Syunik that would connect Nakhijevan to the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side, however, has repeatedly denied being involved in negotiations for the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, stressing that they have only agreed to unblock transport communications in the region.
