Israeli MP to take part in memorial ceremony for Armenian genocide

MK (Member of the Israeli parliament) Mossi Raz (Meretz) has arrived in Armenia to take part in a memorial ceremony for the Genocide on Sunday, April 24, The Jerusalem Post reports.

This will be the second time Israeli MKs take part in the ceremony in an official capacity after current Diaspora Affairs Minister Nachman Shai and former Likud MK Anat Berko attended in 2015.

"The time has come for also Israel to remember the victims and their stories. It's our duty as Jews and as human beings. It's a great honor for me to represent the Knesset and Israel and this important event," said Raz.

Israel does not formally recognize the Armenian Genocide although bills to do so have been submitted in the past.

On April 24, 1915, a large group of Armenian intellectuals was rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. On April 24, 2022, Armenians worldwide will be commemorating the 107th anniversary of the Genocide which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.
