MP suggests renaming Armenia-Turkey border gate after Talaat Pasha

Ümit Özdağ, chairman of Turkey's Victory Party, a far right, ultranationalist, anti-refugee, Kemalist political party in the country, has suggested renaming the border gate between Turkey and Armenia after Talaat Pasha, one of the masterminds of the Armenian Genocide, Cumhuriyet reports.

The party is represented in the Grand National Assembly by a single MP: Özdağ himself.

Özdağ made the suggestion in his reaction to a bill submitted by HDP lawmaker Garo Paylan on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

Earlier, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation against MP Sezgin Tanrıkulı of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) because of his social media posts about the Armenian Genocide. The MP is under investigation for "insulting the Turkish nation and the state of the Republic of Turkey" as per article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code.
