Persian will be taught in schools of Kapan

Beginning from September, the Persian language will be included in the curriculum of schools in the town of Kapan where a consulate of the Islamic Republic is also set to open, mayor Gevork Parsyan said at a meeting with Tehran's ambassador to Yerevan Abbas Badakhshan Zohouri on Friday, April 29.

Syunik Governor Robert Ghukasyan said relations with Iran are very important for Armenia and especially for Syunik, so the province is ready to do everything to make bilateral relations more effective.

Iran and Armenia reached an agreement to open a consulate in Kapan 9 months ago. Zohouri noted that the opening of a diplomatic mission in Syunik seeks to develop relations in all areas.

The ambassador also announced his country's interest in the section of the North-South highway passing through Syunik, and said that some Iranian companies would like to take part in its construction.

Zohouri then reiterated the Islamic Republic's stance on the inviolability of the internationally recognized borders of Armenia and urged all countries to respect its sovereignty.

The Azerbaijani side has on multiple occasions spoken about a so-called "corridor" through the southern Armenian province of Syunik that would connect Nakhijevan to the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian side, however, has repeatedly denied being involved in negotiations for the provision of a corridor to Azerbaijan, stressing that they have only agreed to unblock transport communications in the region.
