Armenia says appreciates Iran's position on territorial integrity

Armenia appreciates the position of Iran on the territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders, President of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan told President of the Majles of the Islamic Republic Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf in Tehran on Wednesday, June 15.

Simonyan said he discussed with his colleague the Azerbaijani-Turkish aggression against Nagorno Karabakh in the fall of 2020.

"I have noted that numerous humanitarian problems have remained after the war, particularly, the return of prisoners of war, the preservation of the Armenian historical-cultural and spiritual values on the territories passed under the control of Azerbaijan," Simonyan said after the meeting with Ghalibaf.

"The encroachments of Azerbaijan towards the sovereign territory of Armenia endanger our efforts aimed at the stability and security of the region. In this respect we highly appreciate the position of Iran on the territorial integrity and the inviolability of the borders."

Azerbaijani forces violated Armenia’s border in several sections in the provinces of Syunik and Gegharkunik on May 12 and 13, 2021 and are still refusing to withdraw their troops from the area. On November 16 of that same year the Azerbaijani side launched a fresh offensive in the province of Syunik, during which Armenian soldiers were killed and taken captive. Furthermore, several Armenian soldiers were killed in Azerbaijan's latest provocation on January 11.
