EU technical mission in Armenia to “assess the situation”

Secretary of the Security Council Armen Grigoryan said Monday, December 26 that a new technical mission of EU observers has arrived in Armenia.

Grigoryan made the remarks in an interview with Public Television and said that the mission is in the country to “assess the situation.”

Based on the agreement between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, European Council and France, the EUMCAP was deployed on 20 October along the Armenian side of the international border with Azerbaijan with the objective of monitoring, analysing and reporting on the situation on the ground.

Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said on December 20 that the European Union was “starting a new phase in the its engagement in the South Caucasus” with a decision to deploy a “transitional planning assistance team in Armenia to enhance the EU’s awareness of the security situation.”
