Putin, Aliyev discuss South Caucasus situation

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev over the phone on Tuesday, February 14.

According to a statement from the Kremlin, the current situation in the South Caucasus was on the table.

“The importance of consistent steps to ensure stability and security on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border was noted. In this context, the commitment to the unconditional implementation of the entire range of relevant agreements between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia at the highest level was reaffirmed,” the statement reads.

Since December 12, the sole road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia - the Lachin Corridor - has been blocked by self-described Azerbaijani environmentalists. Karabakh residents have reported food and fuel shortages, while hospital patients don't have access to essential medicines, with only a handful allowed transfer to facilities in Armenia proper.
