Designated European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia Toivo Klaar has declared that European Union is taking warnings from the International Committee of the Red Cross seriously.

Klaar remarks came after the ICRC released a statement on Tuesday, July 26, noting that despite persistent efforts, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is not currently able to bring humanitarian assistance to the civilian population through the Lachin corridor or through any other routes, including Aghdam. The organisation called ing on the relevant decision makers to allow the ICRC to resume its essential humanitarian operations in the area.

“The ICRC is doing a tremendous job in very challenging circumstances on the ground. It is important that they are able to operate freely. The EU is taking their warnings seriously,” Klaar said on twitter.

Under international humanitarian law, sides must allow and facilitate the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief for civilians in need. This includes medical supplies and essential food.
