The radiation background in southern Armenia remains unchanged despite recent attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, according to Armenia’s Nuclear and Radiation Safety Scientific and Technical Center.
Following airstrikes on nuclear sites in Iran, experts from the center urgently traveled to Syunik to conduct dosimetric measurements in Meghri, Agarak, and Kajaran.
“At present, no changes in the natural background radiation have been recorded in the southern areas of Armenia, but the center continues to monitor the situation,” the statement said.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported instances of radiological and chemical contamination at parts of the uranium enrichment facility in Iran’s Natanz. However, radiation levels outside the site remain within normal limits. At an emergency UN Security Council meeting in New York, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the Israeli airstrike destroyed the above-ground structure of a pilot fuel enrichment plant where Iran had enriched uranium up to 60% (U-235).
