Simonyan: Armenia avoided a new October 27

National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan stated on Public Television that details emerging from the “Holy Struggle” case suggest a scenario similar to the October 27, 1999 parliament attack had been averted.

“It was a preparation for a terrorist act, and in no way could we distinguish it from October 27. This was a case of being saved from a new October 27,” he said, adding that the ultimate aim was to create chaos in the country.

Commenting on an audio recording published by the Investigative Committee, in which Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan is allegedly heard discussing “shooting several people,” Simonyan remarked: “That is the talk of a murderer.”

According to the Investigative Committee, the leaders and members of the “Holy Struggle” movement developed a plan to carry out terrorist acts and seize power. The Committee has released multiple messages, audio recordings, and photographs that it claims detail the planning of these actions.

On the morning of June 25, law enforcement began conducting searches at the homes of “Holy Struggle” supporters. The Committee stated that the movement’s participants and leaders had been planning terrorist and coup-related activities in Armenia. Later that day, it was announced that movement leader Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan was detained for two months. The Committee submitted arrest motions for 16 individuals, of which nine were approved by the court. A decision on one case is expected on June 26, with the rest scheduled for hearings on the same date.

On June 24, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan shared an article titled “The Opposition’s Coup Plan” from civic.am on Facebook, commenting: “This process will go down in history as the ‘traitors’ failed coup.’”
