Russia’s ambassador to Armenia says modern history, especially recent periods, has turned into an arena of ideological, political, and geopolitical confrontation.
Speaking to participants of Armenia’s interuniversity debating championship, Ambassador Sergey Kopyrkin said history today is subject to intense disputes.
“There are many falsifications, outright lies, and attempts to distort key events that shaped the post-war world,” the diplomat said, Sputnik Armenia reported.
According to him, amid profound transformations of the world order, there is an objective need to reconsider a number of historical events in light of new realities. Kopyrkin stressed the importance of such events and intellectual discussions, which help young people work independently with facts, study historical sources, and form their own understanding of the past from today’s perspective.
At the same time, he noted that it is not necessary to hold a single viewpoint or have complete answers to all questions. What matters most is striving for truth and avoiding the influence of propaganda and fake attacks. The ambassador expressed confidence that participation in debates contributes to young people’s intellectual and personal development, and that the knowledge and skills gained will be useful in their future professional and civic activities.
Kopyrkin wished the participants substantive and engaging discussions, emphasizing that there are no losers in such intellectual competitions.
The final round of Armenia’s interuniversity debating championship was held today. The decisive debate brought together teams from the Yerevan branch of Moscow State University and the American University of Armenia.
