Armenia is considering restricting access to social media for children under the age of 16, involving several government bodies, said Tamara Sargsyan, head of the General Education Department at the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports.
According to her, the issue is being discussed jointly by the education ministry, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and the Ministry of High-Tech Industry, Factor.am reports.
“A study is currently underway to assess potential risks, challenges, and regulatory options. Only after a comprehensive understanding is formed will it be clear what restrictions may be applied and which platforms could be included. The issue is sensitive, with many layers and considerations,” she said.
Sargsyan emphasized that it is important to determine how effectively a device can be linked to a child in order to ensure proper enforcement of any restrictions.
She noted that children’s digital safety is a priority and that appropriate tools and regulations must be developed to protect them.
Sargsyan confirmed that there are existing issues in this area and that addressing them requires a systemic approach.
“The digital protection of children is a priority. The state must be confident that it has created sufficient tools and regulations to safeguard children in the digital environment,” she said.
