The European Union is ready to support Armenia in diversifying its energy supplies, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in response to a question about possible energy pressure from Russia.
She was asked what steps the EU would take if Moscow were to raise gas prices for Armenia or halt gas supplies altogether. Von der Leyen said a team of European Union experts would arrive in Armenia next week, according to Factor.am .
"We also want to help Armenia diversify its electricity supplies. That is why a group of EU experts will travel to Armenia next week. We have extensive experience in dealing with such situations. We have gone through this in Ukraine and Moldova and have accumulated significant expertise," von der Leyen said.
The European Commission president also clarified that the €25 million allocated for the Caucasus Transmission Network will be used to strengthen regional energy security.
She stressed that Armenia needs a strategic and comprehensive approach, adding that Europe is ready to stand by Armenia in situations that the European Union itself has already faced.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that electricity transmission lines connecting Armenia with Azerbaijan and Turkey would strengthen the country's energy security. He also described the construction of modern energy storage facilities as a strategic priority, saying they would improve the management and storage of electricity generated from renewable energy sources, and emphasized the importance of EU support.
During a joint press statement in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, von der Leyen said the European Union is offering Azerbaijan cooperation on regional connectivity and welcomed the proposal to build an electricity cable linking Azerbaijan and Armenia.
