Serzh Sargsyan: Protocols are only the first step towards normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations
"The protocols are only the first step in the process of normalization of Armenia- Turkey relations," the RA President Serzh Sargsyan told a meeting with Armenian communities of Europe in Paris. According to him, the goal of the Protocols is to open a way for a difficult but necessary process of normalization of relations with Turkey. "This phase should passed with dignity, as befits a civilized country," the president of Armenia said.
Commenting on the opinion of many experts that the protocols could cast doubt on the Armenian Genocide, Serzh Sargsyan said "this cannot be." "The fact of the Armenian Genocide does not require proof," he said.
Speaking how the process of normalization of Armenia-Turkey relations will to affect the Karabakh issue, Serzh Sargsyan said that the Protocols have no connection to the Karabakh conflict. "Our position on this issue is clear: settlement of the Karabakh conflict cannot be in the same layer as the Armenian-Turkish relations," the President said, adding that the there is still a long way to go to settle the conflict. In the near future no agreement on this issue will be signed.
"Currently, we live in a new political and geopolitical environment, and should be a part of the world, rather than passive spectator," the President of Armenia said.
After the speech Serzh Sargsyan the Diaspora representatives expressed their views. Representatives of Armenian communities stressed that Diaspora will always support Armenia, press office of the President of Armenia reports.
