Aharon Adibekyan: Number of divorces fell 1.5 times in 2009 in Armenia


Decline in birthrates rsulted in an aging population, head of Census and Demography department at the RA National Statistical Service Karine Kuyumjyan told a press conference today. According to her, while in 1990 the birth rate was 80 thousand in Armenia, then in 2007 this figure dropped to 40 thousand.

"The current fertility rate is not satisfactory: in 1990, each household had 2 or more children, today 1 or 2 children are born in each family. The mortality rate of people over working age (62 years and older) is growing every year, and the infant mortality rate up to 1 year has a tendency to decrease ," Karine Kuyumjyan stressed. According to her, life expectancy in Armenia for men is 70 years and for women is 76 years.

"18 thousand 773 marriages were registered in 2009 in Armenia against 28 thousand in 1990. The number of divorces in 2009 totaled 2929, and in 2008 reached 4000, " Karine Kuyumjyan said. According to her, most of the marriages were registered in Kotayk, Armavir and Gegharkunik regions of Armenia. The largest number of divorces in the country registered in the Lori region: more than 330. Sociologist Aharon Adibekyan, in turn, stressed that in the Armenian capital one out of 4 marriages ends in divorce, which is 3 times lower than in the capitals of the world, where 3 out of 4 marriages end in divorce. According to sociologists, 30 per cent of Armenian men abroad marry with Russian women.
