Unique brain and spinal column surgeries performed in Armenia

Endoscopic transnasal removal of pituitary adenoma (benign brain tumor) was performed for the fist time in Armenia.

The operation was performed at RA Defense Ministry’s Central Clinical Military Hospital (CCMH), head of neurological department Artur Hakobyan stated.

As he noted at June 5 Armenian-Russian neurosurgical conference, head of Federal Neurosurgery Center professor Yuri Grigoryan and CCMH surgeon Mushegh Stepanyan were invited to jointly perform the surgery.

As Professor Hakobyan emphasized, the new method allows operating with minimal invasion, making the surgery less traumatic.

Another unique operation performed at the hospital is strengthening of injured vertebral body with bone cement. The new method was named vertebraeplastics. “We’ll base our future operations on improved methods Russian surgeons shared with us,” he noted.
